Mohandas K. Gandhi
(1869 -1948)
Mohandas Karamchand
Gandhi, reverently known as "Mahatma Gandhi" (The great Soul)
was born in Porbandar in the state of Gujarat on the Kathiawar peninsula
on 2 October 1869. He was the third son of Karamchand and Putlibai
Gandhi. Karamchand was the Diwan or Prime Minister of the small princely
state of Porbandar. The Gandhi family had a reasonably good life until
Karamchand Gandhi met with an accident when he was on his way from
Rajkot to Porbandar to take part in the preparations of Mohandas and
Kasturbai's wedding. He was brought to an English surgeon in Bombay.
Nothing came of the operation and the Diwan returned from Bombay in
worse health than before. Mohandas spent much time nursing his father,
but he got weaker and he died in November 1885.
In this collection we
will follow Mohandas from his school days, marriage, law education, and
his journey through the struggle and fight against discrimination in
South Africa, against the British Rule in India and eventually the
departure of the Great Soul to his heavenly abode. |
